Press Release on the European Parliament Plenary Vote on the Recast of the Drinking Water Directive

Brussels, 28 March 2019 -

The European Drinking Water Industrial Alliance (EDW) supports today's adoption of the Drinking Water Directive by the European Parliament.

“Today’s vote sent a strong signal that the same high hygienic standards should apply to all materials and products in contact with drinking water all across the EU. The European Parliament position is a good basis for further trilogue negotiations between the institutions which are expected to begin at the end of the year and will help overcome current fragmentation. It is an important step towards the development of a harmonised legislative framework on drinking water applications. This is good for public health, competitiveness and innovation: all EU consumers will enjoy the same high level of human health protection and EU companies will be able to reap the advantages of the single market”, stated Volker Meyer, Chairman of EDW.

The European Parliament and the Council both agree on the need for harmonisation. We call on the European co-legislators to maintain a high level of ambition in the final text”, concluded Volker Meyer.
