Special report on the implementation of the DWD in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania

In September 2017, the European Court of Auditors - a European institution responsible for auditing EU’s finances – released a special report on the implementation of the Drinking Water Directive (DWD) in Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania.

One of the objectives of this report is to influence the current work of the Commission on the Revision of the DWD. While the report found that DWD provisions have led to an improvement in water quality in these Member States, the report also found that several improvements are needed in such countries.

In particular, the European Court of Auditors recommends new investments in the maintenance and renewal of water infrastructure, in order to minimize water losses in these countries.
